CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
FOR THE 37TH ANNIVERSARY ISSUE
THEME: Resistance
The 2027 theme is Resistance.
Turning away from ongoing urgencies to write a poem, essay, or story: that alone is an act of resistance. It can also take the form of experimentation, unconventional and blended form choices, subversive craft elements, reclamation, and the preservation of familial and cultural content. Resistance is needed in contexts ranging from intimate to institutional. The theme of resistance can be quiet and abstract or loud and explicit; it is roomy and inclusive. We look forward to considering your poems, prose, creative nonfiction essays, reviews, and visual art that embody resistance in surprising, inviting, visionary, clear-eyed, exacting, witty, and/or elliptical ways. In the words of poet and theorist Adrienne Rich, “Art is nothing if it simply decorates the dinner table of power.”
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
- AI-generated content is not welcome.
- Prose includes fiction, creative nonfiction, flash fiction, and critical perspectives (book reviews, literary analysis geared toward a general audience). Please keep submissions under 2,000 words.
- Submissions must be original and not published elsewhere, including blogs and collections.
- You may submit up to 5 entries per genre (poetry, prose, visual arts). Please submit each piece as a separate file. If you are submitting more than one poem, please send one file containing all your poems.
- Poetry, prose, and mixed media entries accepted file formats: .doc, or .docx.
- Do not include your name or any identifying information on the document. Submissions will be considered without author identification. Include your name only in the file name and email message.
- Visual art entry submissions must be publication-quality, with at least 1920×1080 resolution and 300 dpi. Visual artwork needs to be in jpeg, .png, or .tiff formats.
- All submission emails should include a 50-word author/artist bio with name, and title(s) of work. Please inform us if the piece is titled “Untitled.” (We discourage this.)
- We welcome submissions from all CWU students, graduate or undergraduate.
